Group Economics: How Investing with Friends Can Help Increase your Net Worth by Brandon Jackson (guest contributor)

Friends. How many of us have them? Everyone right? Talk to them about your financial dreams and goals! You never know what will come of a conversation centered around finances with the people you trust. Investing as a group of friends can change your whole perspective and open many more opportunities that may not have been available to you as an individual.

Pooling Resources

Several months ago, my friends and I were having a conversation in GroupMe about our financial dreams and goals. The next thing I know we all became part owners of a Real Estate Investment LLC. We’re pooling money together to invest in everything from Real Estate Investment Trusts (REITs) to joining other real estate investment groups and are on track to become property owners within the year!

The work up front isn’t always the smoothest, (making sure everyone is on the same page, setting up a bank account, performing LLC filing, etc.) but I can promise you it’s worth it in the end! When you’re picking up steam it becomes addictive. Investing becomes addictive. I can’t wait to see where we are in 10 years’ time!

Investment Clubs

Through word of mouth I also joined an investment club on my own that has manageable expectations for where I am in life right now. I contribute $25/month and have already seen returns. Since it’s a group setting, we can buy stocks and Exchange Traded Funds (ETFs) that I couldn’t purchase on my own. I’m truly beginning to understand the power of group economics and I couldn’t be happier about the direction it’s taking me financially.

Always remember to invest as much as you can afford to lose. Stretch yourself, too, it’s amazing to witness the results when investing and saving is at the forefront of your mind.

Tracking your Progress

Mint is a platform that I love using and helps keep me organized with my ambitions. I really find value in the goal section. I’m more disciplined because I can see how close or far I am from potential investments I want to make as well as vacations I want to take. Not only that, Mint provides a visual of your monthly cashflow and net worth snapshots (which is what we all should be aiming to increase).

Remember, You’re Not Alone

I can’t express enough how exciting this concept is for me. Don’t shy away from being vulnerable and discussing your financial dreams with others (people you trust of course). I promise it’ll expose you to a whole new world where the opportunities are endless. Investing is a journey. The beauty of it is you don’t always have to attack it alone.

Are you an investor? If so, are you member of any investment clubs? How much do you typically contribute? Let me know in the comments below!

Do you want to be an investor? Stay tuned as I will be writing about REITs, ETFs, and doing a complete review of Mint!
